According to the European court, France was wrong to deny Papon an appeal against his conviction.
Under French law, Paponforfeited his right to an appeal by fleeing to Switzerland shortly after his conviction. He was swiftly captured.Papon's trail in 1998 was a media circus, a fact which his laywers claim prejudiced it.
According to the lawyer, Francis Vuillemin, it is their aim to have this conviction annulled and to win a new trail.
France in unlikely to appeal the ruling, under which it must also pay $25,000 of Papon's cost. 
The Justice Minister, Dominique Perben, said the ruling was of little consequence, especially as the law in France had since changed.
The ruling however, comes at a particular sensitive time in France's agonised relationship with its wartime history.
Prime Minister Jean Pierre Raffarin made a speech in Paris on the site of the former Velodrome d'Hiver, where 13,000 Jews were gathered in 1942 before being dispatched to Nazi death camps. In some of the strongest language yet heard from a French politician on the subject, he listed the sites of the largest deportation of Jews and said: "These transit camps, these ante-chambers of death were organised, maintained and guarded by the French, Yes, the first act of the Holocaust was played out here, with the complicity of the French state".Papon, 91, was jailed for 10 years in 1998 and has applied repeatedly for release on health grounds. He has a history of heart failure.
His latest request was denied on July 24th. Despite collaborating with the Nazi's uner the Vichy regime, Papon went on after the war to become Paris's police chief and a senior cabinet minister. The Papon trail started in 1997, but was interrupted several times for health reasons before he was convicted for crimes against humanity, namely aiding the unlawful arrest and false imprisonment of more than 1.500 French Jews who were sent to the death camps.Last year two former prime ministers signed a petition requesting the release of Papon. 
Jaques Chirac however refused to comply with the request and stated he has no intention of releasing Papon any sooner than his official parole date which is in the year 2004.
Hopefully is the renewed discussion on the French role in the Holocaust a big enough support for the politicians who aren't afraid to speak out on behalf of the murdered Jews of France during WW2.Source:

 Onbegrijpelijk dat deze aanslag bij zo weinig mensen bekend is. Dit kan verbeterd worden indien een TV zender de film van K.M.Brandauer (Elser- Einer aus Deutschland) op een geschikte datum zal tonen.

  Dag,
Geruime tijd geleden kon ik via sateliet zoeken alles huizen in een gebied bekijken door de plaatsnaam of postcode in te toetsen. Wanneer je dit nu doet krijg je voor heel nederland maar 23 items te zien.
Werkt dit niet meer of doe ik iets fout.
Graag bericht aangezien we een huis zoeken in het buitengebied en dan was deze zoekfubctie ideaal.
